How to apply

Applications for a 2024 start are now closed. This programme is still open to those students who can self-fund.

Current opportunities

We welcome applicants from those who are able to self-fund.  Whilst you do not need to finalise a project choice before application, you are encouraged to contact potential supervisors, and are welcome to contact us for guidance on potential supervisors and projects (contact details below) or for information on the application process throughout the year. We appreciate and value diversity, seeking to attract, develop and retain talented people from any background that will contribute to the overall success of Bristol and help maintain our position as one of the world’s leading universities.

How to apply

Our aim is to attract outstanding and highly motivated science graduates, who are excited by the revolution in molecular and genetic epidemiology. You will have a good honours (minimum requirement is a 2.1) or Masters degrees in relevant disciplines, and wish to pursue a career in molecular, genetic or lifecourse epidemiology.

Before you apply

We require:

  • A completed University of Bristol application form. Please select "Molecular, Genetic, Lifecourse, Epidemiology PhD" for the programme. In the funding section of the application please choose `Self-funding`in the text box.
  • A full curriculum vitae.
  • A covering letter/personal statement (max 2 sides of A4) stating clearly that you are applying for the 4-year PhD programme in Molecular, Genetic and Lifecourse Epidemiology. The letter/statement should include sections on your career aspirations/your suitability for this PhD/why you have chosen Bristol and your motivation for a PhD. Please upload this in the `Personal statement` area of the application system.
  • Two letters of reference.
  • A copy of your degree certificates and transcripts.
  • Please note: If short-listed a 2 page research proposal will also be required but NOT at application stage.
  • We recommend watching our webinar video recorded on 14th November which covers many questions on how to apply.

Informal enquiries may be made to our directors on the contacts page

International students

The Wellcome Trust provides full funding for the tuition fee for UK students. In addition the University of Bristol allows two non-UK students per year to join this programme at no additional cost. Other international students would need to first apply for alternative sources of funding to cover the overseas fees for 3 years and be able to self-fund for one year.

Self-funded students

If you have already secured funding through a government scheme, employer or similar you can follow this 4 year model providing you are well qualified. Please get in touch to discuss this further.

Wellcome stipend scales

Information on stipend scales and research consumables, training and other funding provided through these studentships are provided in the "What we offer" section of the Wellcome website.
