Population Health Sciences
We are a leading centre for research in population health sciences. Our multi-disciplinary approach contributes to significant improvements to public health, health care, and policy change around the world.
Key groups and areas of research
- ALSPAC / Children of the 90sBased at the University of Bristol, Children of the 90s, also known as Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), is a world-leading birth cohort study.
- Applied Research Collaboration (ARC South West)We conduct applied health research with our partners and others in the health and care sector, alongside patients and members of the public.
- Bristol Cancer Research NetworkCancer research at Bristol is a vibrant cross-disciplinary community which focuses on core strengths in cancer cell biology, genetic and lifecourse epidemiology and health services research.
- Bristol Evidence synthesis, Appraisal and Modelling (BEAM) CentreWith a shared focus on applied and methodological rigour, our teams generate high-quality evidence to improve patient outcomes and public health.
- Bristol RenalWe aim to improve the management, treatment and prevention of renal disease, by integrating laboratory and clinical research. Our research is focused across 8 main areas: genetics, glomerular cell biology, glomerular physiology, surgical research, translational research, vascular biology, clinical trials, and health services research.
- Centre for Academic Child Health (CACH)A joint initiative between the University of Bristol (UoB) and University of the West of England (UWE), we aim to promote the academic study of child health through inter-professional collaboration.
- Centre for Academic Mental Health (CAMH)Our goal is to conduct high quality research in the field of mental health, to provide outstanding teaching and training, and to ensure that our research findings make a difference to society.
- Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC)We are a leading centre for primary care research and teaching in the UK and one of nine centres that form the NIHR School for Primary Care research.
- Centre for Ethics in Medicine (CEM)We are an interdisciplinary centre for enquiry, education and engagement in healthcare ethics and law.
- Centre for Public Health (CPH)We conduct research into the health of the population, with the aim of promoting and protecting health and well-being, preventing ill-health, and reducing health inequalities.
- Electronic Health Records Group (EHR)We are one of the largest groups in the country with expertise in the use of trusted research environments for applied research using linked electronic health record data.
- Health Economics and Health Policy (HEHP)We work with local and national policymakers, carrying out methodological, policy and applied research across 5 themes; Economic Evaluation and Trials, Health Policy, Modelling, Big Data and Econometrics, and Outcomes.
- Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU)Our HPRU has workstreams on: Economic Evaluation and Modelling, Population Studies, Primary Care, Evidence Synthesis, and Behavioural Science.
- MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU)We conduct some of the UK's most advanced population health science research, using genetics, population data and experimental interventions to look for the underlying causes of chronic disease.
- Population Research UK (PRUK)An initiative dedicated to maximising the potential of longitudinal population studies in the UK across social, economic and biomedical research.
- Qualitative Research Integrated within Trials (QuinteT)Our QuinteT team of researchers pioneer qualitative approaches to optimise recruitment and informed consent to randomised controlled trials (RCTs).
- UK Longitudinal Linkage Collection (UKLLC)We enable cross-sector research, addressing important issues affecting people’s health and wellbeing. Researchers can study a wider range of health conditions, help tackle health inequalities and build on our existing knowledge using linked longitudinal data.
