HRIC Highlights so far for 2021

The Human Rights Implementation Centre are pleased to share with you below a few activities that have been happening recently:

- On 9th February, Rachel Murray participated in a conference organised by the Ministry of Justice for Superintendents in the Overseas Territories. She presented on how standards and inspection regimes are important to improving prison standards for both offenders and prison staff. This is in order to start a conversation on the unique challenges and opportunities for Overseas Territories.

- Rachel Murray presented to the Independent Monitoring Boards in Wales at their conference on 6th February. She spoke about the role of Independent Monitoring Boards within OPCAT and the National Preventative Mechanism and Effective monitoring during COVID.

- On 4th February, Rachel Murray was invited by the UN Office of Drugs and Crime to an Online Expert Group Meeting to Review the Draft Issue Paper on UN Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime (UNTOC) and Human Rights, focusing particularly on implementation and prevention.

- The HRIC have been granted funding from the Ministry of Justice to examine, on behalf of the UK National Preventive Mechanism Secretariat, the legislative basis for the individual UK members. This will feed into proposals for legislative reform being considered by the government.

- On 11th March 2021 the HRIC and the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria held a webinar on the implementation of decisions and judgments of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. It heard from members of these three organs and representatives of their secretariats and registry.
