24 September 2024

The Law School is delighted to announce the launch of a new centre of research. The Centre for Crime, Law and Society (CCLAS) is a centre of excellence and collaboration in the complex interface between crime, law and society.

Led by Dr Clare Torrible and John Peake, the new Centre for Crime, Law and Society unites internationally recognised expertise and wide-ranging methodological approaches to promote scholarly innovation and inspirational teaching.

The CCLAS hosts a dynamic mix of world-class scholars based in the law school whose work focuses on the pressing legal, social and policy questions arising from the interface between crime, law and society.

“I am delighted to be launching this new Research Centre. We are very excited about the innovative research and impact work it will foster and the community engagement and enhanced research-led teaching that will stem from that.

"The Centre will provide a stimulating and inclusive hub for interdisciplinary collaboration and create opportunities to engage with the wider legal community, including practitioners, policymakers, and community groups such as charitable organisations and NGOs.

"It will also act as a high-profile platform to disseminate our work and make a real difference in relation to important contemporary issues such as inequality and institutional/systemic bias."  – Dr Clare Torrible

Join us to celebrate the formal launch of the new University of Bristol Centre for Crime, Law and Society on 2 October 2024, 5.30 pm, in the Lady Hale Moot Court at 8-10 Berkeley Square.

At a time when confidence in the police is extremely low the criminal justice system is at breaking point, it is vital to consider the role of lawyers in challenging systemic inequity and institutional bias and corruption.

This event brings together distinguished academics and practitioners who have dedicated their professional lives to that challenge for a lively discussion of present issues and potential reforms.

Speakers include the Law School’s Professor Joanne Conaghan, Director of Elite Solicitors in Bristol Rodney Wilson, and Founding Director of the Centre for Women’s Justice Harriet Wistrich.
