Professor Steven Greer appointed Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for British Islam

22 February 2022

The Law School’s Professor of Human Rights, Steven Greer, has been appointed Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for British Islam, a newly-established think tank.

Dr Taj Hargey, Provost of the Oxford Institute for British Islam (OIBI), said: “The OIBI is an independent Muslim public policy think tank and research institute promoting fresh inquiry, bold rationalism and creative solutions for contemporary British Muslims in a lively cosmopolitan and novel inter-faith environment.

“As an autonomous research and educational charity, it seeks to be at the forefront of pioneering study and scholastic output for the diverse British Muslim community and actively encourages the participation of those from all faiths and none.

“We are delighted, therefore, to host Professor Greer as OIBI’s first Visiting Research Fellow and greatly look forward to working with him in devising and facilitating an exciting research programme relating to Islam in Britain.”

Professor Greer said: “It is a tremendous honour and privilege to be the first Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for British Islam, an imaginative new academic venture which fills a significant gap in the current research, educational, campaigning, and inter-faith landscapes.

“As a non-Muslim, I greatly look forward to the opportunity this presents to develop my research into Islamophobia and to enhance its impact far beyond the academy.

“I fervently hope this will include contributing to the formation of relevant public policy, and to improving understanding, and the relationship, between Muslims and others in the UK and beyond.”

Professor Steven Greer is also a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and of the Royal Society of Arts, and alongside consultancy work has published widely, particularly in the fields of criminal justice, human rights, and law and terrorism.

His most recent book, ‘Tackling Terrorism in Britain: Threats, responses and challenges twenty years after 9/11’ (Routledge, 2022), assesses twenty years of counter-terrorism policy in Britain since 9/11.

The book’s launch, hosted by Policy Exchange, was marked by an event entitled ‘Tackling Terrorism in Britain: academic and practitioner perspectives’, chaired by Policy Exchange Director Dean Godson, with speakers Nimco Ali OBE (CEO The Five Foundation), Lord Carlile of Berriew QC CBE (Former Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation), Professor Steven Greer, Khalid Mahmood MP (Labour MP for Perry Barr and Senior Fellow, Policy Exchange), and Sir Mark Rowley QPM (Former Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations, Metropolitan Police).
