An interview with our Faculty Wellbeing Adviser Claire Phillips

Press release issued: 24 February 2020

As part of University Mental Health Day on 5th March we are talking to the Wellbeing Advisers who support students in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. Today we put some questions to Claire Phillips.

What inspired you to apply for the role of Wellbeing Adviser here at Bristol?

Something that was really appealing about the role was the opportunity to be part of a new team that is creating something very important within the University. I am passionate about making a difference and empowering others with the tools to manage and improve their own Wellbeing and the chance to do this in a setting where you could be flexible in your approach and not bound by the restrictions of the public sector was too good to miss.  I was also inspired to work within one of the best Universities in the UK and support some of the brightest minds to go on and live successful and fulfilled lives.

Where did you work before / and how is it relevant to your role here?

Before this I was a Youth Worker in South Bristol.  This role gave me lots of transferable skills around adapting my approach to support Young People with a huge range of issues around sexual health, drug use, education and mental health.  It gave me experience in developing new approaches to reach a wider audience as well as creating strong relationships with other support agencies.  All this experience has given me a strong grounding in my role as a Wellbeing Adviser and taught me to always be prepared for the unexpected!

What makes you most proud about your work in the team?

To work amongst such a lovely, hardworking, driven team with such a wealth of experience makes me very proud.  Everyone is genuinely in the role to make the lives of students better and the passion within the team in contagious.  An environment has been created in which no question is a silly one and you never feel alone.

How is life in Wellbeing Adviser a year on?

The service is continuing to grow and develop to meet the needs of students and allowing us to support as many people as possible.  Life in the role is busy, challenging but also very rewarding.
