An interview with our Faculty Wellbeing Adviser Aidarus Aidid

Press release issued: 28 February 2020

As part of University Mental Health Day on 5th March we are talking to the Wellbeing Advisers who support students in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. Today we put some questions to Aidarus Aidid.

What inspired you to apply for the role of Wellbeing Advisor here at Bristol?

What inspired me to apply for this role was the opportunity to be able to work with a university that seemed firstly incredibly committed to addressing Mental wellbeing. The media surrounding wellbeing at the time was challenging and thought this would be an invaluable opportunity not only do something about this proactively but also work with students to equip them with the necessary skills.

Where did you work before / and how is it relevant to your role here?

In my previous role I worked with a charity that supported victims of Hate crime. This meant providing the victim with emotional support and more proactively advocate with the Police/Bristol City Council on the progression of the case. In the role training was also a huge part, this meant giving sessions to local agencies on a number of topics such as ‘Diversity and Inclusion’, Cultural Awareness, Discrimination, Hate speech and how to challenge this safely e.c.t. I gained a wealth of transferable skills which is what I have been putting into use since starting.

What makes you most proud about your work in the team?

What makes me most proud about my work is being surrounded by a team where each member carries a wealth of expertise and put a strong emphasis on information sharing. This means as a service we are well equipped to deal with an array of issues that can come up in the time a student is studying with us. I am also most proud of the passion and the dedication our team give for students to have the best experience with us. Thus, being able to improve quality of student life within the University of Bristol.
