What future undergraduate students can expect from a Law School virtual event

Press release issued: 6 April 2020

Ahead of our ‘live chat’ with offer holders on the 23 April, we caught up with the Director of Recruitment and Admissions for Law, Professor Judy Laing, to find out what students can expect from such an event.

What are the top three things that offer holders attending a Law virtual event can expect to take away with them?

The virtual event is a great opportunity to congratulate the participants and celebrate the achievements of our offer holders. With our entry criteria, getting an offer from Bristol is no mean feat. We hope attendees will leave the event with a sense of pride in being offered a place on our competitive law programme; inspired by what it means to study in a top 10 law school and be taught by world-leading academics – and excited for their future and all that it holds.

How will participants get a feel for the School/City when the event is virtual?

While a virtual event means our prospective students will not be able to explore this great city and experience our facilities first-hand, our 360 tour is a great way to get a feel for our amazing law building  and excellent facilities. We will also have a student on hand to answer any questions our offer holders might have about what it’s like to live, study and socialise in Bristol.

What do you think our offer holders might be most surprised by?

The Law School is home to many academics that are leaders in their fields, from those leading global human rights work for the United Nations, and nationally within the Supreme Court, to those involved in the creation of new legislation in areas such as cybercrime and Artificial Intelligence. We often find that attendees at our events are surprised by how approachable and down to earth their prospective tutors are – and how much passion all our staff have for supporting students on their journey.

What would you say are the benefits of a research-informed curriculum?

We pride ourselves on being a top five law school for research intensity – and what that means in terms of how our research influences and informs our teaching. Our curriculum is challenging and rigorous because of this, and results in students capable of demonstrating critical thinking and excellent legal, analytical and reasoning skills when they graduate. These are key skills that employers are looking for, and a law degree from Bristol means our students stand out in the highly competitive job market. The wide range of legal subjects we teach here also helps broaden a student’s ambition as they develop an appreciation for the diverse application of law – and the many career paths that creates.

What are the most common questions you receive from offer holders at visit days?

We usually get asked a range of questions - about the terms of the offer, to queries that focus on the day to day learning environment, including contact hours, the amount of reading, and how subjects are taught and assessed etc.  We also get a lot of questions about the routes to qualification, and the numbers of students who are successful in getting training contracts and who go onto qualify as barristers and solicitors. We hope that our FAQs will help answer these questions.

Finally, what would your top tip be for someone attending our virtual event?

My top tip would be that wherever you are in the world, to try and think beyond the current situation. Try and step outside of what you are facing today – whether that’s lock down, or an inability to travel – and visualise what it would mean to be a law student starting at Bristol next year. There are challenges ahead, but we are working tirelessly to overcome them. Whatever your situation, come armed with lots of questions, and we’ll do our best to answer them and reassure you that at Bristol you will be able to do more with law than you ever thought possible.
