"Pursuing my Passions": Q&A with law prize winner Yentyl Williams

Press release issued: 25 February 2020

Following last week's graduation celebrations, we caught up with recent final year LLM graduate Yentyl Williams. In this Q&A, Yentyl outlines why she chose to study at Bristol, what she loved about her course and how she came to realise that being challenged has led her to being able to pursue her passions.

Why did you choose to study Law at Bristol?

‘I had been working in Brussels on trade policy and had the opportunity to contribute to both academic and policy discussions on my topic, EU trade relations with African-Caribbean and Pacific countries. At the same time, I never gave up my dream to pursue a PhD and was elated to discover the important contribution to the field by Dr. Clair Gammage here at the University of Bristol. I got in contact with her and the law school admin team, and the rest was history! I feel very lucky to now pursue my passions in an academic environment that facilitates my intellectual interests and aspirations’.

Congratulations on winning Best overall performance in the Socio Legal Studies MSc. How do you feel to have received this prize?

‘I was surprised to receive the award as I did not know it existed! I am grateful for the recognition of my achievement and engagement with the topics explored during the MSc.’

Aside from this achievement, what has been your proudest moment since starting your course?

I was particularly proud of my progress in grasping legal methodology and analysis. Although I was very passionate about the topic of my formative assessment for Intellectual Property law, the grade and feedback for that assessment indicated that I had some work to do to further grasp the skills of legal argumentation. I applied myself and worked harder for the summative and got a grade, which aptly reflected my engagement, understanding and passion for the topic.

What inspires you most whilst studying at the University of Bristol Law?

‘I am inspired by my peers, my lecturers and professors. There is such a diversity of academic, personal and professional backgrounds that discussions during tutorials and outside the confines of the classroom are always stimulating.’

What are your plans for the future? Do you have any long-term goals?

‘I am currently in the first year of my PhD and loving the journey. I aim to further develop my expertise in Intellectual Property law on Geographical Indications and contribute both academically and professionally to the development of this field internationally.

What advice would you give to students about to start their journey into Law at Bristol?

‘Try new things and explore your passions! During the MSc year, I joined several societies and enjoyed different activities, from walking trips around the beautiful South West to socials with the East African community students, step out of your comfort zone and be exhilarated by new experiences!’
