"A community that expands minds": Q&A with law prize winner Ahmed Jelle

Ahmed Jelle

Press release issued: 25 February 2020

Following last week's graduation celebrations, we caught up with recent final year LLM graduate Ahmed Jelle. In this Q&A, Ahmed outlines why he chose to study at Bristol, what he loved about his course and how he came to realise how the world expands his mind.

Why did you choose to study Law at Bristol?

‘The law school is one of the best in the world with a renowned LLM faculty’.’

Congratulations on winning Best Performance in the Law and Globalisation LLM Pathway. How do you feel to have received this prize?

I feel extremely honoured and humbled to be recognised in this way, I’m also extremely grateful to my lecturers, especially Prof. Rachel Murray and Dr. Clair Gammage whose support and guidance was instrumental. Knowing the hard work that went into my LLM, the late nights in the Wills Library and early mornings in class, I’m over the moon with this achievement!

Aside from this achievement, what has been your proudest moment since starting your course?

I co-authored an article with one my lecturers for an international trade law forum which was a high point of my LLM.

What inspires you most whilst studying at the University of Bristol Law?

Without a doubt, the people. Bristol is extremely diverse and this is perhaps what makes the university and indeed the city, great. Engaging with people from such diverse backgrounds and all parts of the world expands my mind and allows me to grow both professionally and personally.

What are your plans for the future? Do you have any long-term goals?

My immediate future goals are to study my PhD at Bristol following which I plan to lecture as well as expand my practice in the field of international trade law, especially within the African context.

What advice would you give to students about to start their journey into Law at Bristol?

Have fun! One might forget that university isn’t all about burying your head in a massive legal text at Wills. You’ve got to enjoy your university experience holistically. Join as many societies as possible, network and socialize with your uni mates. Especially for international students, that’s what makes the whole experience worthwhile.
