Dr Oliver Quick shortlisted for St. Petersburg International Private Law Prize

Press release issued: 3 May 2019

The Law School’s Dr Oliver Quick is among the global nominations for the prestigious St. Petersburg International Legal Forum Private Law Prize for his book ‘Regulating Patient Safety: The End of Professional Dominance?

The annual St. Petersburg International Legal Forum (SPBILF) is an international platform for discussing questions faced by legal professionals as well as examining ideas on modernising law amidst current global changes.

Dr Oliver Quick is one of six candidates shortlisted for the 2019 SPBILF Private Law Prize. The SPBILF states that the “conferral of this truly global academic award is intended as a testimony of its winner’s ultimate academic excellence, while the cash prize component is meant to advance the realization of the laureate’s ideas of worldwide significance.”

Oliver’s book ‘Regulating Patient Safety: The End of Professional Dominance?’ looks at areas of health law that receive too little attention, such as health and safety law, criminal law and coronial law. It examines systematic challenges for patient safety from professional, regulatory, and legal perspectives, and argues for a patient-centred rather than professional-dominated approach to regulation and professionalism.

Commenting on his work’s nomination, Oliver said:

"I'm delighted that my book Regulating Patient Safety: The End of Professional Dominance? has been shortlisted for the St Petersburg International Legal Forum Private Law Prize. I've been really pleased by how the book has been received and the recognition that legal scholarship can make a positive contribution to the challenge of improving patient safety.

It is especially nice to be following in the footsteps of Professor Paula Giliker after her book was shortlisted last year. I look forward to attending the Forum and to flying the flag for Bristol."

Together with Professor Ken Oliphant, Head of the Law School, Oliver will be attending the Awarding Ceremony in St. Petersburg during the IX St. Petersburg International Legal Forum, held from May 14 - 18, 2019. The Winner of the Prize will be announced during a special ceremony on May 14.
