Professor Nishan Canagarajah, Pro Vice-Chancellor said, “Our ambition is to be an inclusive and diverse organisation, and endorsing Black History Month allows us to share activities of our staff and students with local communities.”

In the Law School last month Dr Foluke Adebisi held the Decolonisation and the Law School conference with a full programme of speakers. The talks explored what 'decolonisation' means for us and what the possibility of decolonised law means for the relationship between law and society.

In a previous article from July, Dr Adebisi wrote; “Decolonisation requires us to be intentional about engaging with Britain’s history of very active participation in slavery and colonization, as well as the complicity of academics and universities in enabling, benefitting from and not properly acknowledging that history and its remnants.”

Along with Dr Yvette Russell, Dr Adebisi also introduced the Law and Race unit at the Law School in the 2018/19 Academic Year. An exciting addition as very few Law schools in the UK teaches race in any direct or focused way.

As part of the university's BHM activities, Dr Adebisi is working with the SU and Global Lounge organising the Pan-African festival on the 30th October. All students and staff are encouraged to attend the Black History Month activities that are still to run, including Professor Olusoga speaking on Windrush, the St Pauls Art and Heritage Trail, A Celebration of Black Art at the University: Open Mic Night and much more. The programme of events has been pulled together by the BME Network in collaboration with the BME Success Programme and the Bristol SU events team.
