Q&A: Studying the LLM in Health, Law and Society as a law graduate

Press release issued: 23 March 2018

In the lead up to the release of our new film showcasing our new LLM in Health, Law and Society, we hear from current LLM student Damie Oladebo on why she chose to study at the Law School and what most attracted her to the course.

How did you hear about the course?

I actually heard about the course through word of mouth! I was a law student at the University of Southampton, and due to John Coggon's connections with the school a lot of staff members knew about the upcoming programme and were quite keen to relay information about it to the students.

What about the course appealed to you?

I'd always had quite the interest in Health Law and really enjoyed doing health law based subjects during my undergrad, so after completing my first degree I really saw no other option for myself but to pursue this interest further. While many other universities had Medical Law, or Health Law programmes, the Bristol programme stood out to me because it advertised itself as taking quite a multidimensional approach to health. Of course, my main interests pertain to health law. However, being someone who has just always generally had a thirst for knowledge, I felt that being in a course that had a more multi-faceted approach would be quite suited to me.

How have you found the course - was it what you expected?

I've absolutely loved the course so far! I can honestly say that choosing this particular course was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made.

What have you enjoyed most about the course?

I've really just enjoyed the wide variation of subject matter that we have dealt with on the course. I love learning new things and viewing things from different perspectives, so that has definitely been a main highlight for me across all areas of the course.

What have you found most challenging about the course?

I've found some of the subject matter a little bit challenging. Not in a bad way, but obviously because the course has such a multi-dimensional approach it is quite common to come across some subject matter that it quite foreign to you. In particular it's taken me a little while to grasp some of the issues concerning economics and public procurement. However, nonetheless, I have found these areas really fascinating and am quite happy to step up to the challenge.

Has there been a particular subject area that you have been most inspired by in terms a potential career move?

It's quite difficult for me to just choose one subject area because I think that the subjects complement each other very well, which is another really great thing about the course; what you learn in one subject often illuminates areas in other subjects so you can adopt quite a well-rounded view of health, law and society as a whole. In terms of particular career move at the moment I'm quite interested in policy development and/or continuing legal research and I feel like the course would be beneficial for me with regards to either of these career possibilities.
