Q&A: Balancing work with part-time study - LLM Health, Law and Society

Press release issued: 23 March 2018

In the lead up to the release of our film showcasing our new LLM in Health, Law and Society, we hear from current part-time LLM student David Williams. David's work as a paramedic inspired him to enrol on the LLM course to further his knowledge of current issues facing health, society and how law brings them together.

What was it about the course that encouraged you to take on a part time course?

Working as a paramedic, it struck me that many of the 999 emergencies I attend in the community often reflect greater issues within society. These may be social factors as a result of health inequalities for example. The ability to take a step back from clinical practice to be able to think about how we may find solutions to these bigger issues is what really appealed to me. Thankfully, a part time option was available with this LLM, which allowed me to maintain clinical work.

How have you found the course - was it what you expected?

The course has certainly been enjoyable and most importantly intellectually stimulating. The course is different from a traditional medical law and ethics masters. The broader approach, including studying topics such as health inequalities, in my opinion is the key to tackling some of the problems in a modern NHS.

What have you enjoyed most about the course?

I think I have most enjoyed discussions in seminars with academics and peers. It is very interesting to see how, on what could be perceived as a simple question there can be many valid points of view. My cohort is made up of a variety of backgrounds including law graduates and healthcare professionals, amongst others.

What have you found most challenging about the course?

Coming from a non-law background was certainly a challenge. Terminology that law graduates and academics would use frequently was definitely unchartered territory. However I was very well supported with this, with generous amounts of help offered.

How have you found balancing work/study?

As a full time healthcare professional I was certainly apprehensive about the workload. However, it has certainly been manageable so far. The academic work is demanding but the key bit for me is preparation.

Has there been a particular subject area that you have been most inspired by in terms a potential career move?

I am lucky to already have an established career structure ahead of me within the paramedic profession. However, my eyes have been opened to additional options including health policy and public health.

How did you hear about the course?

I was looking at traditional medical ethics and law courses. I found the Health, Law and Society masters through internet searching. I was put in touch with John Coggon who was able to provide more specific advice on whether the course was suitable for me.
