Overcoming Education Barriers and Achieving Diversity

Press release issued: 15 November 2018

New student led initiative, the ‘Unity and Diversity in law’ committee hosted an engaging conference namely “Overcoming Education Barriers and Achieving Diversity” on 10 November in the Great Hall at the University of Bristol. This diversity initiative which is the first of its kind at Bristol was sponsored by the University of Bristol Law School, Burges Salmon LLP, Travers Smith LLP, Ashurst, BCLP, Eversheds Sutherland LLP and Strive.

The attendees included students from universities all across the UK as well as solicitors from law firms. Unity and Diversity in Law’s founder, Prekshi Gulia started the conference by talking about the importance of increasing diversity and inclusion within the legal sector.

The talk about diversity and inclusion was then taken forward by an exciting panel that included Pushpinder Saini QC (Blackstone Chambers), Desmond Brown (Chair of Mayoral Commission on Race Equality at Bristol), Chrissie Wolfe (Solicitor at Irwin Mitchell and Founder of Law and Broader YouTube channel), Harri Davies (Operations Executive of Aspiring Solicitors) and Chris White (Founder of Aspiring Solicitors).

The talks ranged from statistics on diversity to their personal experiences. Students found the panel discussions very engaging and interesting.

An additional exciting feature of the conference was that one of the panels also involved university students who talked about their own personal experiences and struggles they overcame. The panellists included Raeesa Rajmohamed (LLM student at the University of Bristol), Chloe Tang (Final year law student at the University of Bristol) and Prekshi Gulia (Final year law student at the University of Bristol and Founder of Unity and Diversity in Law).

The event was followed by a networking session alongside canapés and drinks where students got an opportunity to connect with the panellists.
