STUDENT NEWS: Law Clinic application process open

The Law Clinic team prepares to welcome the 2018/19 student members. UoB Law: L-R: Omar Madhloom (Teaching Fellow), John Peake (Director) and Louise Chalice (administrator)

Press release issued: 1 October 2018

The University of Bristol Law Clinic provides students with an opportunity to gain a real-life experience of law, offering free legal advice and support to members of the public under the supervision of Law School staff. The 2018/19 application process for a place at the Clinic starts today.

Due to demand, the Clinic is pleased to announce an increase in places available this year, with 32 places allocated to first years and 35 places to students from other years. This is in addition to third year students taking the Clinical Legal Studies module, which gives them an automatic place at the Clinic.

This year will also see the introduction of a new training programme for joining first year students run by Director John Peake and Law Clinic teaching fellow, Omar Madhloom. The programme will last for the whole of their first year in university and involve hypothetical case management using diverse scenarios.

This is a rigorous training process introduced to help prepare first year students for real-life case work – an experience that they take into their second year of study, and for legal practice in general.

For inspiration, read our interview with law graduate Hannah Gough, who won an award for ‘best student volunteer in the Law Clinic’ earlier in the year. In it she discusses her experiences of studying in the Law School, her time working in the Law Clinic and the inspiration she found leading the Clinic’s work with the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, supporting families with legal advice.
