Professor Sir Malcolm Evans delivers key note speech at fifth annual conference of the African Consortium on Law and Religion Studies

Press release issued: 16 May 2017

Professor Sir Malcolm Evans, Deputy Director of the Human Rights Implementation Centre has delivered a keynote speech at the opening session of the fifth annual conference of the African Consortium on Law and Religion Studies (ACLARS), taking place 14 to 17 May 2017 in Rabat, Morocco.

The theme of the conference 'Religion, Law and Security' focuses on religious extremism, blasphemy, violence and terrorism.

Sir Malcolm during his talk entitled 'Freedom of religion or belief; a threat to global security or a means if enhancing it?’ argued that since conflicts which have taken on religious dimensions are often more difficult to resolve, it is imperative to lessen the likelihood of this happening. Since a proper appreciation and application of the freedom of religion or belief within a community makes it more difficult to miscast religious difference for political purposes, ensuring proper respect for the freedom of religion or belief should be seen as an importance pre-requisite for enhancing global security.

The other opening keynote was given by Jan Figel, the European Union's Special Representative on freedom of religion and belief.
