Press release issued: 1 February 2017

It has been a busy year so far with University of Bristol Law students participating in numerous intervarsity mooting competitions in the UK and abroad. Teams of Law School students recently tested their advocacy skills in two prestigious intervarsity mooting competitions across the globe.

The University of Bristol Law School was represented in the 13th K.K. Luthra Moot, the only exclusive International Criminal Law Moot Court held in India, by Toby Chandler and Sorcha Dervin (second year LLB students). Kieran Freear (second year LLB student) supported the preparation of the mooters’ memorials by providing research assistance to the Bristol team. The Bristol Law students flew to New Delhi and competed against Indian Universities progressing to the octofinals – placing the University of Bristol amongst the top 16 out of 60 universities coming from India, the US, the UK, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Toby’s and Sorcha’s memorials were also praised for their quality and use of authority and came 21 out of 60.

A team of Bristol Law students also participated in the Central Eastern European Round of the European Human Rights Moot Court Competition in Warsaw. Joyce Man (MA in Law) and Esther Farnham (LLM in Law) prepared their submissions on a terrorism scenario concerning the restriction of human rights protected under the European Convention on Human Rights by national security measures. The two students argued their case in four rounds before Polish Judges and Members of the Polish Bar Council competing against universities from across Europe.

The participation of Bristol students in international moots was funded by the Law School and was supported by the School’s Mooting Academic Advisor, Dr Sofia Galani, who also coached the students participating in the human rights moot.

Dr Sofia Galani, Lecturer in Law and the School’s Mooting Academic Adviser said:

‘It has been a privilege to work with the students who represented the School in this year’s international moots. All the students worked very hard under tight deadlines and they performed very well in the moots. I have no doubt that this experience was truly beneficial to them as they exposed themselves to different styles of advocacy and areas of law. It is within the School’s priorities to continue expanding our advocacy programme and supporting talented law students keen to represent the School in intervarsity moot competitions’.
