Human Rights Implementation Centre writes report on Options for the National Preventative Mechanisms in Ireland

On 2 October 2017 the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) held a roundtable in Dublin on ‘Ireland and the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture’. This launched a report that had been commissioned by the IHREC and written by the HRIC's Professor Rachel Murray and Dr Elina Steinerte looking at options for the national preventive mechanism in Ireland.

‌A number of presentations were made including by Professor Murray and Professor Sir Malcolm Evans in his capacity as chair of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture. The roundtable was attended by representatives from government departments and inspection bodies as well as civil society organisations. Sandra Smith, the Principal Officer of the Department of Justice and Equality stated that the research was ‘very valuable and which we intend to use and build upon’.
