National Volunteers’ Week: Boost your skills with volunteering

Press release issued: 9 June 2016

In our latest update from the Careers Service, Lara Melhuish, Employability Consultant for the Faculty of Social Sciences & Law, talks about the benefits of volunteering – and why you need to shout about it when you start applying for jobs.

Volunteering is a great way to help others and give something back to your community. However, it can also be a useful way for you to explore a particular industry or organisation from the inside to help you narrow down potential career choices.

Volunteering can also help you to gain valuable work experience and make yourself more employable through developing transferable skills that employers from any sector will value. These could include communication, team-working and organisation skills, but the list is endless!

Don’t forget when you are talking about your volunteering experience in an interview or writing about it in a job application or CV to provide specific examples to show evidence of the skills you have developed.

For help on making effective job applications please look at the Careers Service website. Aside from giving you lots of examples of skills to put on your CV, employers also value those who have volunteered because it shows your commitment and demonstrates that you have stretched yourself above and beyond the demands of getting your degree.

So, if you haven’t considered it before, it could be a great thing to start! Find out more about volunteering opportunities have a look at the SU website.
