Oliver's paper is called 'Leaving patients to their own devices?' and explores the regulatory, ethical and policy challenges presented by mobile medical technology. This technology includes apps which provide fitness data via smart phones or watches to more advanced products which can track heart rate and rhythm, monitor maternal and fetal health, and scan suspicious skin lesions, for example. The paper explores the challenge of regulating the safety of such technology, and considers the implications of using self-monitoring devices for therapeutic relationships.
The conference is organised by the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics, and further information can be found on their website.
