Law School mooting team beat off 14 Competing Universities to win 3rd national intervarsity competition

The third national intervarsity competition took place on February 13, 2016 at the iconic Wills Memorial Building. Fourteen teams from universities from across the country competed in a knock-out style competition consisting of two preliminary rounds, the semi-finals and finals.

The students had to argue an employment law case. The moot problem was kindly prepared by Professor Michael Ford QC.

Bristol competed against King’s College London in the final round and won the competition. The final was judged by Mr Justice Green and Mr Justice Newey. The excellent performance of the finalists was commended by both judges.

The event was sponsored by Simmons & Simmons, LexisNexis and the University of Bristol Law School.

Jocelyn Ormond, Partner at Simmons & Simmons, and Rhiannon Morgan-Williams, Associate at Simmons & Simmons, also very kindly supported the event by judging the first rounds of the competition. The Law School and St John’s Chambers also provided judges for the day, who offered invaluable feedback and advice to the competitors on how to improve their advocacy skills.

Julian Göring, a final year law student and Senior Master of the Moot said:

"This year’s Bristol Intervarsity Mooting Day was an absolute success, with fourteen competing universities in attendance. Congratulations to the deserving winners of the competition, Lucy Bennett and Joe Docherty, who represented Bristol immaculately. Thank you very much to our judges for giving up their Saturday to make this competition happen. We are also extremely grateful for the financial and organisational support provided by Lexis Nexis, Simmons&Simmons and of course the Law School".
