Why I volunteered for the Law Clinic

Press release issued: 23 June 2016

Before coming to Bristol, Emily Kelvey received a First Class in Politics and International Relations from Loughborough University. She has just finished the first year of the MA in Law here at Bristol. In this interview Emily talks about why she choose Bristol, her role in the Law Clinic, the satisfaction of giving back to the local community, and how the experience has increased her employment prospects. She also has some advice on time management for students wanting to apply for next year!

Firstly, why did you choose Bristol to study law?

I decided I wanted to study law about half way through my undergraduate degree.  Most students would have gone on to do the GDL, however I really did not want to do that. Bristol is one of only a few universities who offer the 2 year Law MA as opposed to the 9 month GDL. I wanted to actually understand law, not just learn to pass exams.  I thought the two year course would suit my learning style and put me in the best position to start my career.  So really that choice was easy, I then had to decide where to do the MA.   Bristol's reputation attracted me, not just the university but also the city.  The University of Bristol Law School has an amazing reputation, and having got to know the staff I can see why.  They are all experts in their field. The other activities that the Law School offers, like the Law Clinic, also attracted me.

Why did you decide to work for the Law Clinic?

I wanted to be a part of the Law Clinic for a variety of reasons.  Most importantly because I admire the work that they do.  I wanted to get more out of my education by being a part of an organisation which really gives back to the community of Bristol.  I believe that being a member of the Law Clinic will not only help my education by being able to practice what I’m learning, but it will also improve my employability when I leave.

What has been most rewarding for you personally during your time with the Law Clinic?

It has to be my first case.  Our client got in contact with the Law Clinic because he was being taken to the small claims court by debt collectors.  He came to us for advice on how to structure his defence.  My Law Clinic partner and I worked tirelessly researching and evaluating various arguments that our client could use.  The judge found in our client’s favour! It was so good to see our hard work pay of and our client happy.

What has been your biggest challenge whilst working for the Law Clinic?

My biggest challenge whilst working for the Law Clinic has been trying to get my head around exceptional and sometimes obscure legal issues, using the right terminology whilst at the same time making the process clear for the client.

What types of cases have you worked on?

I am currently working on all sorts of cases.  From employment cases to landlord disputes, from consumer concerns to insurance issues. It’s one of the best things about the Law Clinic, the cases are so varied that you learn so much.

What advice would you give a student looking to apply for a place at the Law Clinic next year?

The Law Clinic is an amazing organisation to be a part of. It makes real difference in people’s lives. However, it needs to be understood that it is a big commitment and a significant responsibility.  Time management and professionality is key.

How have you enjoyed being at Bristol?

I had a few friends who are Bristol graduates and they all had a great time here.  I too have really enjoyed studying in Bristol, I love how active the community is. It makes you feel like your part of something much bigger.
