Twelve teams from English and Irish Law Schools competed in a number of preliminary rounds followed by a ‘break’ to semi-finals, at which stage the competition reverted to a knock-out format. Four teams reached the semi-finals and Bristol won the finals competing against Exeter.
The Grand Final was chaired by senior members of the British or Irish judiciary, including Mary Finlay Geoghegan, the daughter of Thomas A Finlay and judge of the Irish Court of Appeal.
Following the presentation of awards, the Bristol students participated in a Gala Dinner which gave them the opportunity to socialise with other law students and network with judges and practitioners.
The participation of the team in the competition was funded by the Law School which generously supports the participation of law students in national and international intervarsity moots as part of the School’s Advocacy Programme.
Georgina Rea, a second year law student, and winner of the 2016 Thomas A. Finlay Moot Competition said:
‘We would like to thank our lecturer and Mooting Academic Advisor, Sofia Galani, for encouraging us to participate in the competition and organising it all! We had such an amazing time and the judges gave such high-quality feedback. Genuinely, it was an invaluable experience and it was so great to represent the university’.
