Bristol Intervarsity Debating Day

Nicole Brendel, Chair of the Debate

1 March 2016

This year the UBLC were very excited to host a brand new Intervarsity competition as part of the calendar, an Intervarsity Debating Competition sponsored by TLT LLP and the University of Bristol Law School.

The day consisted of eight universities, including King’s College London, Exeter and Southampton who competed at Bristol in three rounds of competition. Motions included 'This house believes the proposed investigatory powers bill is a step too far' and 'This house believes that corporations should not be subject to political pressure to retrospectively pay taxes that have been legitimately avoided'. Ultimately the finalists were Exeter and Bristol debating 'This house believes equality can never be a reality' where Bristol, Oliver Capildeo and Connor Donnithorne, took the victory.

The day was a fantastic opportunity for networking with the firm and enjoying intellectual debate between excellent participants representing their law school. Thanks to Nicole's idea and determination, it is now set to be an annual event on the law school’s calendar!
