Labour Provisions in Trade and Investment Arrangements

Press release issued: 8 May 2015

Free trade agreements have the capacity to enhance or significantly diminish protection of labour standards. This is a vital area of research in which scholars and policy-makers are beginning to exchange ideas. On 13-14 May 2015, Professor Tonia Novitz will be visiting Washington DC to speak at two events at George Washington University in liaison with the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The first event is an Advisory Committee meeting in which Professor Novitz, as one of a number of academic experts, will comment on an ILO draft report on ‘Assessment of labour provisions in trade and investment arrangements’ which is to be amended in the light of this input, and released later this year. The second event is a day-long conference on ‘Working for All? New ideas and innovative strategies to enhance economic and social benefits in trade agreements’ in which Professor Novitz will speak at the final roundtable on ‘innovative ideas with regard to labour provisions’. The aim is to investigate how trade agreements can promote employment, enhance the link between economic and social benefits and promote sustainable development. For further information contact Professor Tonia Novitz or The International Labour Organisation.
