Every year the Law School funds the participation of a number of students in inter-varsity mooting competitions across the country. The students are offered a great opportunity to enhance their advocacy skills, build strong networks with legal professionals and represent their own University in national competitions.
The Law School is dedicated to supporting our students to get hands-on experience of mooting successfully.
On Thursday, December 3, a special training session was organised aimed at assisting our inter-varsity mooters in preparing for these national mooting competitions. The students had the opportunity to work on a moot problem and argue their case before experienced judges.
Lester Boothman, retired Circuit Judge, Tim Rose, Sansbury Douglas Partner and Deputy District Judge (Bristol alumnus) and our very own Professor Michael Ford QC (Bristol alumnus) worked with our inter-varsity team and gave them invaluable feedback as to how to improve their advocacy skills, prepare their bundles and build a strong skeleton argument.
The training session was followed by a well-attended showcase moot open to undergraduate, postgraduate and Erasmus students interested in understanding what a moot is.
Two of our most talented mooters, Joe Dogherty and Stella Ng, argued their case before a three-judge bench who praised the excellent performance of the two students and also explained to the audience what a good mooter has to do.
The showcase moot was followed by a Q&A session that gave an opportunity to all the students who attended the event to ask our judges and inter-varsity mooters questions as to how to prepare for a moot and what the benefits of mooting are.
The event was organised by our final year student, Hannah Quinney (Inter-varsity Co-ordinator), and our Mooting Academic Advisor, Sofia Galani, illustrating the Law School's commitment to improving its Advocacy Programme - one of the most popular extra-curricular activities.
