On 20th March the Human Rights Implementation Centre will be hosting a workshop of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) for the UK entitled 'UK NPM workshop on the Use of Force and Restraints.' The UK's NPM is composed of 18 groups whose mandate covers different detention types, and focuses across the four countries in the UK. The workshop offers an opportunity to bring key people together.

One of the common elements of deprivation of liberty is the use of force and restraints, which is subject to strict rules and procedures that must be obeyed by those administering them. Rules vary depending on the type of deprivation of liberty, the person being restrained, and the situation. The aim of the workshop is to discuss the methodology of UK NPM organisations in respect of monitoring the use of force and restraints in places of deprivation of liberty. The workshop will also incorporate a presentation by researchers from the Omega Research Foundation, who have done extensive research on 'the tools of abuse.'
