As an Education PhD student, you will benefit from supervision by leading academics in your field, and research training and development through our Diploma in Educational Research.

The Education PhD programme normally takes four years to complete on a full time basis. Part time study is also available. New PhD students join the programme in September each year; we are now accepting applications for entry in September 2021. Your supervisor will be allocated on the basis of the information given in your research statement, which you are required to provide as part of the application process. They will be well-placed to provide academic advice and support, and also act as your personal tutor to provide pastoral care and guidance to you throughout your studies.

You will begin with research training, which equips you with the essential research skills required for doctoral-level study in Education. In your first year on the programme (or two years for part-time students), you will undertake you will undertake five core units, four of which are assessed, from the MRes Education programme:

You may request exemption from any of these units if you can provide evidence of equivalent previous experience or qualifications.

You may also opt to audit units from the MRes Education and attend classes without submitting assessed work.

Once you have completed the research training stage, you will then progress to the research stage. Working closely with your supervisor, you will carry out the research project as outlined in your research statement at the application stage. Your progress will be monitored via the University’s Annual Progress Monitoring exercise, and through frequent contact with your supervisor. Once your research is complete, you will submit a 80,000 word thesis for examination. An external and internal examiner will be appointed, and they will conduct your viva voice examination.
