The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Curriculum (TLC) is concerned with questions relating to education in schools, universities, community and out-of-school contexts, including a focus on issues of social justice. We research the learning of individuals, groups and systems from a range of perspectives, including practitioner research.
Our areas of research
- subject pedagogy
- school leadership

- professional learning
- teacher educator learning
- neuroscience and education
- technology and education
- the climate emergency/global challenges and education
The centre benefits from methodological diversity alongside common interests in de-colonisation and indigenous pedagogies and perspectives.
A key aim of the Centre is to provide a space for the sharing of ideas and expertise, promoting joint writing and joint research bids.
The Centre is a home for many doctoral students in the School of Education.
Coming soon
Join us for the next TLC research seminar, taking place on Tuesday 25th March 2025 at the School of Education.
Our member, Michael Rumbelow, will be in conversation with Robin Taylor (Associate Head of St. Paul’s Nursery School and Children’s Centre and a Specialist Leader in Early Mathematics).
Today, Block Play has become a popular activity among children. LEGO is now the world's biggest toymaker, Minecraft the most popular video game, and the YouTube channel of BBC's CBeebies Numberlocks - an animated mathematics education series aimed at 4-7 year olds - has registered almost 10 million views. So why have there been so few studies of using Block Play from a mathematical perspective in Early Years settings?
This will be a hands-on, experiential session with opportunities to playfully explore Block Play yourself!
