The University of Bristol’s School of Education has been ranked 8th for research quality and 8th for research power in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Overall, 90% of the School’s research was assessed as either 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' with 60% of that in the 4* category. This compares to a sector average of 37% 4* in the subject.

The School of Education's ranking was 8th for research quality, which is two places higher than our REF 2014 ranking. Our research environment was rated 100% as world-leading, and 89% of our outputs and 87.5% of our impact were rated as either 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent', according to the Times Higher Education.

School of Education Head of School, Professor Melissa Allen said of the results,

" It is an absolute pleasure to lead a School where research is driven by genuine intellectual curiosity and a thriving research culture. The REF submission reflects the School as a whole and was a collective endeavour, only made possible because of each and every one of the excellent researchers that make up our School and the Professional Services colleagues who contribute to our research activities and support staff."

The REF 2021 Results

The REF is the UK's system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. It is a process of expert review, carried out by expert panels for each of the 34 subject-based units of assessment, including education.
