The seminar will explore the links between decolonising the university and wider processes of democratisation.

It will be argued that decolonising education requires fundamentally transforming the increasingly instrumental role of universities under neoliberalism to one that can support the quest for equitable and sustainable futures.

Central to this project is the need to transform the university into a pluriversity (de Sousa Santos, 2017). This requires efforts to diversify the Faculty and the student body. Fundamental to this process is the necessity to value the voices and perspectives of racialised and minoritised staff and students and include them in processes of university governance and policy making and to engage with the interests and struggles of people of colour in the city of Bristol, nationally and globally.

The seminar will ask how processes of decolonisation intersect with other struggles for justice including those based on race and ethnicity, indigenous rights, environmental justice, gender, sexuality and class. The seminar will draw on specific examples from across the university to illustrate its main arguments. As in the preceding seminars it will seek to draw out the opportunities as well as identify the real constraints in realising transformative change.
