About the event

In his now classic text, Outline of a Theory of Practice (1977), Bourdieu highlighted habitus as a “system of lasting, transposable dispositions which, integrating past experiences, functions at every moment as a matrix of perceptions, appreciations, and actions…” And since Bourdieu’s introduction of habitus as part of his conceptual toolkit, there have been significant extensions and reformulations the term.

It's clear that Bourdieu's theory of habitus matters, but how can it shape our global and local struggles for solidarity across class, gender and race both within and beyond the academy? Professor Diane Reay - one of the leading international sociologists of our time - explores this, drawing upon her own work within the field.

The event will close with a wine reception, courtesy of the School of Education, at 18:00, followed by dinner, drinks and dancing from 19:00 until late at The Lost & Found, located at 85 Queens Road, BS8 1QS.
