Speaker: Dr Joanna M Burch-Brown, University of Bristol

In June 2020, the statue of Edward Colston was toppled and thrown into the Bristol harbour during a Black Lives Matter protest. Images of the event travelled around the world, and it became an iconic moment in a growing global movement for racial justice.

In this talk, Dr Joanna Burch-Brown will share stories and reflections from her journey with contested heritage in Bristol, first as an activist with Countering Colston, then as an advisor to institutions like the Colston Hall (Bristol Beacon) and Bristol Post, and most recently as co-chair of the Mayor's Bristol History Commission. Drawing on examples from co-curating the display of the Colston statue in the MShed museum, to developing participatory educational resource Bridging Histories, she will present a toolkit to help teachers and communities address challenging history in a way that brings people together to create positive change for the future.
