Speaker: Dr Rhonda Di Biase, Senior Lecturer, Melbourne Graduate School of Education

Within the highly dispersed nation of the Maldives, a new professional development policy was adopted in 2009 to promote school-based professional development. This placed greater focus on the school leadership team to support professional development opportunities for teachers. Within the island schools, leading teachers play an important role in providing guidance and support to teachers in their daily work. However, in practice their role is often focused on administration and monitoring rather than providing instructional leadership and classroom-based support. In this presentation the different priorities and approaches of leading teachers, across island schools, will be compared exploring how in the same policy environment, this role can be enacted in very different ways.

Rhonda Di Biase works at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. She currently coordinates the Graduate Certificate of Educational Research. She previously worked at the Maldives National University in the area of student-centred pedagogy as part of a post-tsunami aid project. Her research interests include pedagogical reform, teachers’ professional learning and education in small states. She is particularly interested in the enabling conditions for promoting active learning pedagogical reform. Her classroom teaching experience spans all levels of schooling in Australia and Asia.
