Speaker: Dr Ioanna Bakopoulou, Lecturer in Psychology in Education, School of Education, University of Bristol

The effective use of language underpins many aspects of successful learning. Ioanna will present research that shows that strong oral language skills are linked to better outcomes for children and young people at school and beyond, and that disparities in language learning can affect children’s access to the curriculum and their achievement in school. There are significant concerns that these inequalities are being exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, mandated school closures and prolonged periods out of school.

To address this issue, Ioanna will present preliminary results from her evaluation of the ‘Supporting Spoken Language in the Classroom’ programme and defend the importance of whole school-based language interventions as a means by which we can address the injustices worsened by the pandemic.

This event is hosted by the Language, Literacies and Education Network (LLEN)
