Speaker: Professor Alf Coles (Professor of Mathematics Education, University of Bristol)

In this inaugural lecture, Alf will recap 25 years of research into the teaching and learning of mathematics, including his involvement in an experimental curriculum in a school in East Bristol, influences on Teaching for Mastery in England, and recent work linking schooling to socio-ecological concerns facing marginalised communities. A common theme emerges of the dramatizing of the curriculum, an idea which will be explored and implications drawn for the future.

Inaugural lectures provide an opportunity for academics to share their achievements in research, innovation, engagement and teaching activities before an audience of members of the University community and the general public.
