The Be More Empowered for Success PGR Programme, established in 2022, has developed a programme of activities and events aimed at supporting an increased sense of belonging and connection among home Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic postgraduate researchers in the University. We had a chat with the group's Advocates to learn more about their experiences running the group.

What's been your favourite event to run so far?

Tanya: An event that stands out to me is the Board Games night that we hosted in the PGR hub.

Kumuthu: One of the memorable events I have organised was a boat tour of Bristol's floating harbour. We learnt about the city's origins and the transformation of the harbour throughout history.

Anna: My favourite event was Craft Night. It was such a refreshing break from the pressures of postgrad life and a chance to unwind, get creative, and indulge in some sweet treats.

AmirThe movie night at the PGR hub was one of the events I co-ran with other BME4S PGR Advocates and one of my favourites!

Adrienne: Our crazy golf event at Par59 back in January was a lot of fun, it was a great opportunity to meet some familiar and new faces whilst cheering each other on to get a hole in one!

How would you describe the atmosphere?

Tanya: The atmosphere was incredible—full of laughter, a bit of friendly competition, and some great pizza! Even though many of us had just met, we all connected instantly.

Kumuthu: We explored Bristol in a unique and immersive way, enjoying the summer sunshine in a relaxing, scenic atmosphere that fostered a sense of comfort throughout the tour.

Anna: The atmosphere was warm, relaxed, and incredibly welcoming. There was a real sense of community, and it was lovely to see people embracing their creative sides.

Amir: It was a chilled-out and relaxed evening, watching Hidden Figures, a powerful true story which attendees could relate to. The hot chocolate and snacks also helped keep the evening chill at bay.

Adrienne: The atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful, as everyone was eager to unwind from the day's study stresses, socialise, and enjoy a fun-filled evening.

What would you say to someone considering coming to an event?

Tanya: The events are always fun and a great way to connect with students who share similar experiences, so do come along – whether you’re new or a returning attendee.

Kumuthu: We offer a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment, providing opportunities to connect with fellow PGRs and enrich your overall student experience. We always look forward to meeting new people.

Anna: Be More Empowered for Success events are a fantastic way to meet new people, have new experiences, and take a well-deserved break from PhD stress. You might discover a new hobby or make some great friends.

Amir: Just do it and come along! You’ll never know who you’ll meet and - whether an opportunity for career development or talking about your research - it's also a great way to make new friends!

Adrienne: Come join us! You'll receive a warm welcome from the advocate team, connect with a diverse range of people from across the university beyond your subject, and importantly, have fun or discover something new!
