KS2 Word Roots success!

11 February 2021

Classics for All trainer Charlie Andrew ran an afterschool online Word Roots event for KS2 teachers in Bristol and across the South West.

On Thursday 11th February, Classics for All trainer Charlie Andrew ran an afterschool online Word Roots event on behalf of the Bristol Classics Hub for KS2 teachers in Bristol and across the South West.

The workshop had a fantastic turnout, with 21 teachers attending from 16 different schools. Together we explored some key Latin and Greek root words that feature frequently in English, and looked at strategies and resources to help support the teaching of literacy at primary level.

Towards the end of the session, Sonia Thompson, Head Teacher at St Matthew’s CofE Primary School in Birmingham, and Rachael Swonnell, KS2 teacher at St Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Primary School in Downend – both keen Latin enthusiasts – said a few words about the benefits of studying the language at KS2.

Several of the teachers in attendance have since expressed their interest in introducing Latin to their students, on both a curricular and extra-curricular basis. Overall, a great success!
