Bristol Classics Hub for the South West

The Bristol Classics Hub supports the development of classical subjects in schools across the South West. We believe that every pupil deserves to benefit from the learning, enjoyment and inspiration that the Ancient World provides.

Funded by Classics for All and the Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition, the University of Bristol’s Classics Hub aims to widen access to Classics by offering a powerful and stable focus for regional development.

Established in September 2016, the hub supports the take-up of classical subjects in state schools where there is no current provision, but also works to strengthen and enrich the pre-existing provision of classical subjects in schools across the region.

Through the Bristol Classics Hub, teachers can access training in teaching Latin, Greek or Classical Civilisation, as well as practical and strategic support with curriculum planning. Events for teachers and students in all key stages are held throughout the year.

The presence of a regional hub based at the University of Bristol provides a focal point for Classics activity in schools across the South West. We hope that it will help to foster regional Classics expansion and encourage the sharing of expertise and the development of new approaches to Classics teaching.

The Bristol Classics Hub has its roots in an earlier project pioneered by former Institute Leventis Fellow, Jessica Priestley. For more information, please read Laying the foundations for the hub (PDF, 102kB)

School workshops

We offer a range of school talks and workshops for all key stages. We aim to be as flexible as possible, responding to school needs rather than offering a fixed package of workshops. To discuss how we can support your school in this way, please contact classics-hub@bristol.ac.uk.
