Alumni Profile: Sophie Osbourne

What did you study at the University of Bristol?

I studied Chemical Physics with Industrial Experience at the University of Bristol, spending my industrial placement with the Fluids Department at Schlumberger Gould Research looking at enhanced oil recovery, and my final year project in the Diamond Lab looking at secondary electron emission in thin diamond films.

What did you do when you graduated?

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, and by chance found myself interviewing for a role at Hydrock NMCL, a specialist nuclear safety and environmental consultancy.

What does your job involve?

In the sixteen months I’ve been here, I’ve been involved in projects for clients across the nuclear industry, from organisational capability of new build organisations to modifications to decommissioning reactor safety cases, and everything in between. My typical week involves working on three or four different projects, plus undergoing further study in radiation protection. I’ve also been supported in attending conferences on nuclear regulation and nuclear, and visits to nuclear sites, including the Hinkley Point C build site and the now shutdown Magnox reactor at Wylfa.

I’m really enjoying my job, I’ve recently started my own project and every day brings something different.
