Panel Discussion Speakers

Andrew Garrad CBE FREng

Andrew Garrad was recently awarded the 2024 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in recognition of his work to advance the design, manufacture and deployment of high-performance wind turbines. He has been professionally involved in wind energy for 40 years and built his first wind turbine in 1971. He subsequently co-founded the Garrad Hassan Group in 1984, which grew to become the world's largest renewable energy consultancy. In 2017, he received a CBE for services to renewable energy. Andrew chaired Bristol's year as European Green Capital in 2015 and has recently been appointed to chair the Independent Commission on Energy from the Severn Estuary. He is also on the board of a community interest company, Ambition Community Energy CIC, which owns and operates England's largest onshore wind turbine.

For wind energy consultancy Garrad Hassan he led a team of around 100 engineers, working for customers worldwide to design twenty multi-megawatt turbines, including a 7MW, 171m diameter offshore turbine - the world’s largest when the prototype was built. David masterminded the development and commercialisation of the aeroelastic code ‘Bladed’, used throughout the global wind industry as a design tool for onshore and offshore turbines. He also chaired the International Electrotechnical Commission Working Group which developed the international design standard for offshore wind turbines. David is currently active in renewable energy teaching and research with a variety of universities, including Bristol and Exeter.

Johnny Gowdy

Johnny is a director of Regen and leads the development of their advisory projects, energy strategy and whole energy system modelling capability.
