Press release issued: 23 August 2021

Digital inequality in the city could severely impact life chances, according to new research published today (Monday, 23 August) by Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI) and Knowle West Media Centre.

The team surveyed more than 5,000 residents of Knowle West about their experience of digital technologies during the first COVID-19 lockdown. They found negative impacts that could shape educational outcomes, job opportunities or access to essential services.

The result is a Digital Divide Policy Paper (PDF, 4,929kB) which sets out how Bristol could drive initiatives to reduce the digital divide, particularly in areas of multiple deprivation.

The work was supported by the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute and Bristol Digital Futures Institute.
