ARTEM

ARTEM aims to develop low-noise aircraft concepts through combining innovative noise reduction technologies.

As a project partner of ARTEM (Aircraft noise Reduction Technologies and related Environmental iMpact) we contribute to developing and investigating novel approaches for low-noise aircraft configurations. Our focus is set on the passive control (reduction without additional energy expenditure) of aerofoil self-noise using surface treatments. Testing and analysing various treatment designs, our research addresses the mechanism of the reduction of noise scattered at the aerofoil trailing edge due to its interaction with turbulence. From a large number of rapid prototyping models tested on a flat plate and various aerofoils, the most efficient are selected for parameter optimisation. The results of our study describe a simple module that can be added to aircraft configurations in order to achieve additional noise reduction and further enhance our understanding of the turbulent boundary layer development across rough surfaces and surface irregularities.
