University of Bristol launches new School of Accounting and Finance

3 August 2020

Today the University of Bristol has announced the launch of three new schools to replace the School of Economics, Finance and Management (EFM). The new schools are, the School of Accounting and Finance, the School of Management and the School of Economics.

Over the past decade, the School of EFM expanded its student body, course offering and numbers of academic and professional services staff. This expansion has reached the point where the University and the School’s students, staff and stakeholders will benefit from the creation of three new schools that reflect the disciplinary excellence in Accounting and Finance, Management and Economics.

The School of Accounting and Finance builds on a tradition of scholarship and learning established over a long period here at the University of Bristol. Our aims continue to be the educational development of our students and undertaking impactful research that changes the way we think about the society in which we all live. Our structure as a School of Accounting and Finance rooted in a social science faculty is unique in the UK and ensures that our teaching and research focuses on our core disciplines but within the context of our wider role in society.

The school’s degree courses and programmes are delivered by academic experts, with 78 per cent of research in the school recognised as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” in the most recent Research Excellence Framework review (REF 2014).

The school has six research themes:

  • Accountability, Sustainability and Governance
  • Banking
  • Corporate Finance
  • Financial Markets
  • Financial Reporting
  • Management Accounting

Ian Tonks, Head of the School of Accounting and Finance adds: “We are all excited to be part of this new development at the University of Bristol which builds on the traditions of our educational degree programmes and offers opportunities to establish a unique research brand as a stand-alone School of Accounting and Finance”.
