External Examiners for Taught Programmes
External examining provides a crucial means for maintaining academic standards and is an integral part of the University’s Quality Framework. External examiners offer informed, independent and comparative views of academic standards, of assessment processes and programme structures, and of good practice and innovation. All taught programmes and components require an external examiner.
External examiners should ensure that they are familiar with:
Policy
The Policy for the External Examining of Taught Programmes (PDF, 279kB) sets out information for Schools and external examiners on nomination, appointment, reporting processes, and on roles and responsibilities. It is consistent with the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) current guidelines.
External Examining Handbook
The External Examiner Handbook (PDF, 1,215kB) accompanies the policy and is intended to provide Schools and external examiners with additional information and guidance about their respective roles and the external examining procedures at Bristol. This includes information related to external examiner appointment, induction, responsibilities, and fees.
