SafeTea Campaign Evaluation

SafeTea is a multi-media campaign to prevent hot drink scalds and improve first aid for burns, which will be launched on Burns Awareness day October 16th 2019, sustained for 6 months and then evaluated.

CACH Team: Alan Emond, Linda Hollén, in collaboration with Cardiff University (co-PI Prof A Kemp)

Epidemiological and clinical research has identified that scalds from hot drinks are a major cause of burn injuries to young children. If their young child is burned, parents often do not apply appropriate first aid (cool running water for 20 minutes). To address this problem, we have designed and tested ‘SafeTea’- an intervention to prevent hot drink scalds to infants and toddlers and to promote burns first aid knowledge to parents. SafeTea materials, including video, printed material, fridge magnets and reach charts have been tested and piloted with parents of young children in Cardiff and East London. From October 2019 we are rolling out ‘SafeTea’ as a national multi-media intervention using social media. The impact and reach of the national campaign will be evaluated using mixed methods in 2020.
