About Helicon

Helicon Magazine is Bristol University's Forum for the creative artistic talents of its students, staff, or indeed, members of the Bristol public. It is a quarterly showcase for poetry, prose writing (fiction or non-fiction), exemplary academic essays, photography and art. It is free and is distributed widely throughout the University precincts and as of December, 2003 Helicon is now also available at the Bristol city-centre branches of Borders, Blackwells, STA Travels, Boston-Tea-Party, Pret-a-Manager, Café Nero and Café Gusto.

Like many University Magazines before it, Helicon was conceived in the University's Department of English. It grew from a Creative Writing group founded by Niccola Yeeles of the English Department’s Falstaff society. Under the mantle of its founding member and visionary first Editor (2002-03), Helicon was launched with the kind support of the Alumni Foundation, KPMG, the Falstaff Society and several individual donors.

What sets Helicon apart from previous poetry magazines, however, is the equal footing given by the magazine's Editors to other diverse forms of creative expression such as prose, art and photography. Helicon's aim was and is not simply to be an in-house poetry magazine for the English Department, but to be first a University wide, and then city wide publication containing original work of a high quality.

The magazine has encouraged contributions from students across the board of the University’s diverse Departments, a fact reflected in Helicon’s Editorial team which comprises of students from both the Arts and the Sciences.

Helicon now has its own awards section in the University’s Annual Student Media Awards held every spring, under the 4 categories of: Best Poetry , Best Prose, Best Photography/Artwork and Most Novel Contribution of the Year.

The Editors would like to thank Helicon’s benefactors and contributors and look forward to more contributions, suggestions and feedback.
