Homework

Some of the Homework exercises which you may find useful:

All the homework is linked to either the reading of Baker and the other texts which are quoted, or to the assignment or exam.  Work which you should attempt includes the topics below.

  1. Read Johnson, Liddell and Erting (1989) - prepare a 500 word or 5 minute BSL video summary for handing in.  You can compare it to the Gregory and Pickersgill, booklet on bilingual education.  We will discuss this quite extensively in the tutorials and it is important for the final assessment.
  2. Read Freire(1972) chapters 1 and 2.  You will have quite extensive notes on this in the session notes.  You can find the book in the library or a copy in the Resource room box for the course.  This will be part of the discussion in Session 2 and possibly 3.
  3. Construct a pilot language interview or system which will allow you to classify bilinguals.  It should include questions about extent of use, situations in which it is used, the domains where the person feels comfortable etc.  You will have more details in the course sessions.  Baker, chapter 2 covers this and gives quite a few ideas.  Try it out on some bilinguals.  You should describe the results in a 10 minute video or 1000 word summary.
  4. Meet with 2 people who are bilinguals and who learned their languages when they were children.  Only one of them should be Deaf.  Ask them to describe their experiences and make notes.  How typical was their experience?  We hope that you will have a chance to discuss this in more detail at one of the discussion sessions.
  5. Meet with 2 people who are bilinguals but who learned their second language after the age of 20 years.  They have to be people who never met anyone from that language until that time.  Ask them to describe their experiences and think about how well they learned the language.  What  did they think was the best way to learn?
  6. Meet with parents of Deaf children and discuss their experiences.  Consider to what extent their family situation is bilingual.  You might use one of the language use questionnaires from Baker.
  7. Read papers 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4(very important), 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, from the book "Constructing Deafness" by Gregory and Hartley(1991).  Also read Evans chapter in "Sign and School".  You should make notes on these.  You should also consult the book “Growing Up in Sign and Word.  The aim is to begin to think about how sign can be used to help Deaf children to read.
  8. Compare two people in the Deafness field - eg a teacher, a parent, a social worker, an interpreter.  Discuss with them the levels of language which they have to achieve in sign and in English.   What do you think is the best way for them to achieve their goal?

All of these can be carried out by you and discussed with the tutor.  They are designed to bring the course to life by applying the ideas in different situations.  Learning from the course involves you in taking some of the ideas into the practical domain.
