This unit has been developed for the MSc Course in Deaf Studies.  It draws on a long-standing unit in the MEd and a previous Diploma course.  However, the research and practice in the deafness field has moved a long way since these Units began their life.  Many people have taken the unit over the years and there has been a great deal of multilingual and multi-cultural feedback and input from the participants.  The new unit draws on that work.

There have also been several conferences of relevance to this in the last ten years and the work of research students and colleagues have contributed further.  The field is continuously evolving and we will continue to learn about the richness and diversity of bilingual experience.

Most recently the work of Paddy Ladd has been of particular value in the development of related resource papers in regard to the status of sign language.  Flo Canavan’s work on deaf children in families was a major influence in the sections on parents.  The changes in Deaf education are a major factor in the development of sign bilingualism.
